Infrared Light Therapy

Infrared light is the invisible part of natural sunlight. Although it is actually light, it is experienced as soothing, warm radiant heat (and sometimes referred to as infrared heat). It is completely healthy for all living things and one can be exposed to infrared light for hours without the risk of burning. Although infrared light is a naturally occurring wavelength of the sun, it does not contain the harmful UV rays associated with unprotected sunlight. In fact, infrared is so safe, it is used in hospitals to warm newborn infants.

While in our suites, infrared light can penetrate human tissue up to 2 inches, and is therapeutic because of its ability to be absorbed by our body and safely raise core body temperatures. In fact, your core body temperature increases over 3 degrees (to over 102 degrees) after each 40-minute session. This self-induced “fever” (as we call it) results in a healthy, deep and detoxifying sweat at the cellular level, where the majority of toxins reside.

Our skin is the largest organ in the human body and sweating, the body’s internal cooling system, is the most natural and effective way to detoxify. In addition, infrared light therapy promotes excellent cardiovascular conditioning and weight loss. This is achieved by increasing your heart rate by 50-75% while in our suites which, in turn, burns real calories.

In the last 35 years, extensive research has been conducted by European and Japanese doctors on the therapeutic benefits of infrared radiant heat. In addition, methods to induce fevers and sweating have been used for centuries to bring improved health and relief from disease.

 

Infrared vs. Traditional Hot Rocks

Infrared light (heat) is very gentle and soothing. The experience is similar to lying in the sun on a warm day and feeling the heat radiate to the core of your body. Unlike traditional saunas (hot rock or wet/steam) which operate in excess of 180°F, infrared saunas have the benefit of being effective at a more comfortable operating temperature of 120°-150°F.

Traditional saunas simply heat the air in the cabin (versus raising core body temperature), making the experience unbearably hot and difficult to breathe. Infrared heat penetrates human tissue vs. simply heating the surface of the skin. Infrared saunas are 7 times more effective than traditional saunas at detoxification. By raising the body’s core temperature over 3 degrees, infrared saunas can produce a sweat composed of 20% toxins vs. only 3% toxins with a traditional sauna.
